Housekeeping and food & beverage workers at the Chicago Marriott at Medical District hotel overwhelmingly voted to join UNITE HERE Local 1 in May 2018. Hotel management has since refused to begin contract negotiations.

On November 28, 2018, workers participated in a one-day unfair labor practice strike to protest the Marriott Medical District’s refusal to bargain. A week later, James Lee, a bartender and 11-year veteran at the hotel, was fired.

In July 2019 the National Labor Relations Board issued a complaint finding that the hotel “has been failing and refusing to bargain” with its workers in violation of U.S. labor law.

On November 6, 2019, the NLRB ordered the hotel to “cease and desist” from refusing to bargain, and to start negotiating with its workers. The hotel has yet to begin negotiations.

Workers at the hotel are overworked, underpaid, and have earned the right to negotiate a fair contract with decent, affordable health insurance and other protections.
